Christiana Care Health System, Wilmington, Del.

RAS has worked extensively with the Christiana Care Health System in the design and construction of several important projects on their campuses. One of the most recent projects is the Healing Garden Courtyard at the Wilmington campus. The rich, heavily planted garden provided a refuge for staff and patients near the Emergency Room, one of the most active areas in the hospital. Patients at the hospital's Center for Rehabilitation use the garden to help regain skills lost to brain injury. The garden has different types of surfaces, along with steps and ramps that provide an environment in which therapists can work with patients who are learning to walk with assistive devices or regaining their mobility when recovering from surgery or an injury.

The Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden, located in Richmond Virginia, offers year-round beauty on an historic property with 50 acres. RAS designed the central garden complex and conservatory, incorporating a new visitor center and a new educational building. The design features a progression of outdoor "rooms" with walled courtyards, a medicinal and meditative healing garden, and a sunken garden with oval fountain. Programming and plans were prepared for exhibits in the 15,560 square-foot conservatory. In 2017, Cond?(C) Nast Traveler voted Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden the fourth "Most Beautiful Botanical Garden in the U.S."

The Historic Wilmington Delaware estate of Alfred I. duPont (1864-1935), Nemours Mansion and Gardens, comprises an exquisite 77-room mansion, designed by Carrere and Hastings, set within an expansive series of French-styled gardens. RAS provided the planning and oversaw a full-scale historic restoration of the gardens, from preservation planning through completed construction. Work included an extensive conditions assessment report followed by comprehensive drawings and specifications for the 225 acres of garden, arboretum, woodland and meadow. The highlight of the garden restoration is the central Vista Garden, with its fountains and plantings brought back to their original splendor.

Greenville Delaware Residence, Brandywine Valley, Del.

At this Greenville Delaware residence the project was inspired by the characteristic ruins one finds in the Brandywine Valley, the garden was conceived with "old" walls from previous buildings that would have existed on the property. The new pool complex was built to incorporate the fabricated ruin walls as an integral feature. Verdant, naturalistic planting provide a soft backdrop and provide seasonal interest to the space. RAS was involved in all phases of the project from the initial concept to construction documentation and through construction.

Delaware Botanic Gardens, Pepper Creek, Del.

Delaware Botanic Gardens at Pepper Creek is a new world-class, inspirational, educational, and sustainable public botanic garden in southern Delaware with a public opening planned in 2019. An ecologically based design ethic guided the planning process for the 37-acre site. Partnering with architects Lake/Flato, and the renowned garden designer Piet Oudolf, RAS developed the site master plan and initial concepts for the entry and arrival sequence, parking, buildings layout, and meadow garden. The gardens will showcase the rich diversity of plants that occur naturally or are well suited to growing conditions in the Delmarva Coastal region.

As seen in LASN magazine, October 2018.
