Fasting and Prayer
A Day of Fasting and Prayer for the World’s Leaders

You’ve sent money to relief agencies. You’ve worn red, white and blue ribbons for weeks, you’ve placed an America flag on your house and car. You sent emails of support to President Bush. What else can you do to support your country and stand against terrorism?
Monday, October 1 has been designated as a day of fasting for our national leaders and for all world leaders.
As you are aware, our President, our Congress and all the world’s leaders will now need to choose how their countries will respond to the attacks on America in the event of military action, or even war. This day of fasting is to ask God to encourage these men and women to seek His wisdom and to accept it as the best plan of action against terrorism and those who harbor and support terrorists. The book of Proverbs, in the Bible, tells us that God will grant wisdom to every person who seeks it.
If you participate, be prepared to abstain from food for one day, from sunrise to sunset, on Monday, October 1, 2001, and to pray throughout the day for the world’s leaders to seek and accept the wisdom of God in this matter. Prepare by reading the second chapter of Proverbs:
"My child, listen to me and treasure my instructions. Tune your ears to wisdom, and concentrate on understanding. Cry out for insight and understanding. Search for them as you would for lost money or hidden treasure. Then you will understand what it means to fear the LORD, and you will gain knowledge of God. For the LORD grants wisdom! From his mouth come knowledge and understanding. He grants a treasure of good sense to the godly. He is their shield, protecting those who walk with integrity. He guards the paths of justice and protects those who are faithful to him. Then you will understand what is right, just, and fair, and you will know how to find the right course of action every time.
"For wisdom will enter your heart, and knowledge will fill you with joy. Wise planning will watch over you. Understanding will keep you safe. Wisdom will save you from evil people, from those whose speech is corrupt. These people turn from right ways to walk down dark and evil paths. They rejoice in doing wrong, and they enjoy evil as it turns things upside down. What they do is crooked, and their ways are wrong. Wisdom will save you from the immoral woman, from the flattery of the adulterous woman. She has abandoned her husband and ignores the covenant she made before God. Entering her house leads to death; it is the road to hell. The man who visits her is doomed. He will never reach the paths of life. Follow the steps of good men instead, and stay on the paths of the righteous. For only the upright will live in the land, and those who have integrity will remain in it. But the wicked will be removed from the land, and the treacherous will be destroyed." Proverbs chapter 2.
To be sure that you are praying for each country which may be involved, get
a world map, or download one from the United Nations website at and mark off each country as you finish praying for it. If you can, pray for each country’s principal leader by name.
The book of James, in the new Testament of the Bible, tells us that the prayers of each justified person make a big difference in our world. Jewish tradition says that the prayers of the faithful weaken the demons and strengthen the angels.
For we are not fighting against people made of flesh and blood, but against the evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against those mighty powers of darkness who rule this world, and against wicked spirits in the heavenly realms. Ephesians 6:12 NLT
