2010 Landscape Expo a Huge Success Even in Recovering Economy

More than 3,000 landscape professionals, ranging from landscape architects to lawncare professionals attended the 2010 Landscape Expo in Long Beach, Calif.

The 2010 Landscape Expo (TLE), held October 6th and 7th in Long Beach, Calif. was a tremendous success experiencing significant growth in both attendance and number of exhibitors, despite a still struggling economy.

Celebrating its 50th year anniversary, the expo has continued to forge ahead as the top industry event for design, build and maintenance landscape professionals in the southwestern United States.

Attendance also rose from 2,600 in 2009 to a little over 3,000 attendees at the 2010 show, a noticeable increase of about 20 percent. The number of exhibiting companies also went up in 2010.

Exhibitor numbers also increased as 231 exhibitors participated at this year's show compared to 185 exhibitors in 2009. When asked about how the show was going for them, exhibitors expressed a high level of satisfaction with the turnout, as well as the quality of leads they were getting.

The 2010 Landscape Expo featured a 50 percent larger exhibit area than the 2009 show. This year, 231 exhibitors participated in the show compared to 185 last year, an increase of about 25 percent.

Ewing Irrigation Products, a long time exhibitor, was at the show to increase awareness about hardscape products that were recently added to their product line. James Minnich, outside sales manager, expressed his continued excitement about the Landscape Expo's move from Pomona to Long Beach, Calif., in 2009.

"Long Beach is a great venue," Minnich stated. "This show has been very good for us. The first day was packed with people and we've been very pleased with the response we've been getting at our booth."

"This is probably the best show we've gone to in the past five years." said Michael De Lucca, sales manager with Turf Star, Inc. an equipment distributor in southern California. The company has exhibited at the Landscape Expo for several years, according to De Lucca.

The main objective of TLE is to support the landscape industry through education, product introductions and networking. During the 2010 Landscape Expo, more than 45 seminars were presented, hundreds of new products were on display, and face-to-face interactions were taking place throughout the exhibit hall between those who build products or offer services and thousands of landscape design, build and maintenance professionals.

Jim Coker, manager of engine fuels at Heritage Propane in Dandridge, Tennessee, was very pleased with the show turnout, especially from municipal and city representatives.

Richard Wills of the Southern California Turfgrass Council awards $500 cash to lucky winner, Sergio Lopez, who works for the City of Montibello. A total of $5,000 in cash giveways was handed out during the two day event.

"This is my first year attending the show and I have been ecstatic about the attendance. The interest in what we're showing has been great. I just can't say enough good things about the show here in Long Beach," Koker said.

From responses received from the post-show survey, 91 percent of exhibitors were highly satisfied or satisfied with the number and quality of leads they received during the show. An overwhelming majority indicated that they were able to meet and speak with attendees who had no previous knowledge of their products or services.

With solid representation from the design, construction and maintenance segments of the landscape industry, the attitude from show attendees was also positive. The majority of respondents to a post-show attendee survey rated the show as very good. 83 percent said that they were likely to purchase or specify products or services from companies who exhibited at the show. Virtually everyone surveyed said they would most definitely recommend the show to others.

Ten lucky attendees walked away from the show with $500.00 in their pocket. Each of them had their name drawn during 10 separate drawings held throughout the show. The cash prize giveaway was sponsored and conducted by the Southern California Turfgrass Council. The winners were: Nathan Takehara, John Ross, Juan Garcia, Juan Soria, Tom Kelly, Sergio Lopez, Barney David, Lloyd McGlothin, Nozomi Shikauchi, and Joe Lodinsky.

Other prizewinners at the show include Fern Nueno who won a beautiful Bamboo Tiki Bar from Backyard X-Scapes and Juan Hernandez, who won the American Outdoor, all-stainless steel barbecue grill, from RH Peterson Company.

The only problem with the 2010 Landscape Expo is that too many people showed up. Due to the large turnout and heavy rains outside, registration became overcrowded and the entrance to the show was delayed for some
attendees.

"We are excited about the heavy turnout and will be taking the necessary steps to ensure a smooth and efficient registration process at next year's show, come rain or shine," says Margot Boyer, tradeshow manager.

The 2011 Landscape Expo is scheduled for October 12th and 13th and will again be held at the Long Beach Convention Center in Long Beach, Calif. Discounted Early Bird pricing is currently available and booth space can be reserved now by contacting expo sales at (714) 979-5276 ext. 113 or by email at tlesales@landscapeonline.com.
