Photoshop Digital Simulation

Course Description:

With the advancement of computer technology, computer graphics have become an integral part of the Landscape Architecture tool set. One of the most advanced and diverse applications impacting Landscape Architecture is Adobe Photoshop. This offering will use Adobe Photoshop to create a photo realistic image of a proposed landscape project using an image of an existing site and redesigning it using images of various materials. Also, find out how to remove or enhance existing items that will be a part of the new solution. Come and learn how versatile Photoshop can be for demonstrating to clients a realistic and easy to understand view of your landscape ideas. Participants may bring digital images to the workshop if they wish, but all instruction materials necessary will be provided.


Ashley Calabria is an Associate Professor of landscape architecture in the College of Environment and Design at The University of Georgia. Professor Calabria has taught computer graphics for over 16 years and also teaches traditional graphic communication, portfolio development, senior studio and various study abroads. Her publications and conference presentations focus on shifts in graphic techniques within the profession and the impact that computer applications have on traditional means of graphic representation. Ashley is currently co-author of a book titled Computer Graphics for Landscape Architects: An Introduction and is the Associate Editor of Digital Information for Landscape Architect and Specifier News.

In regard to service, she was Design Chair for the World of Wonder Playground in Athens, Georgia, which at the time was the largest community built playground in the state. Several years ago she collaborated with students and worked on a conceptual master plan for the Alps Road Elementary school campus. More recently, Professor Calabria has been a part of several successful interdisciplinary grants which fund workshops for public school teachers on developing educational gardens. In the summer of 2012, she was the Landscape Architecture faculty for UGA Costa Rica Study Abroad, Nature and the Environment course where she worked with a group of LAR students to design an Ethnobotanical Garden housed within the San Luis Botanical Garden which focused on plants for medicinal purposes, food production, construction materials, tools and arts, fabrics and dyes as well as supporting reforestation efforts and local wildlife habitats.

She has received numerous teaching awards including CED Faculty of the Year award for two separate years and the student-elected Faculty of the Year award. She has taught in Cortona, Italy, San Luis Ecolodge in Costa Rica and plans to continue her international teaching exposure in Brazil, where her husband's family is from. Professor Calabria holds a BS in Environmental Science in Botany from the University of North Carolina-Asheville and an MLA from the University of Georgia.
