Stewardship in Practice: Tools, Strategies & Metrics

CEU Accreditation: LA CES, 1.5

Presented by: Marian Marum
Friday, February 8th - 1:30 - 3:30 PM

Course Description:

The Stewardship Movement is re-defining social, economic, and ecological strategies across the globe. From large corporations to individual landscape architectural practitioners, the world is facing increased societal pressures to address environmental concerns in a more proactive and responsible way.

Beyond policies, initiatives, and philosophies addressing environmental issues, landscape architects need effective tools. Supported by the San Diego Chapter of ASLA, The Stewardship Committee set out in 2009 to create, collect, and distribute valuable tools, data, formulas, and informational resources that will help 'raise the bar' and move design in a more sustainable direction, in order to meet the challenges associated with the paradigm shift that is taking place within the profession and around our planet.

This presentation will introduce the Steps to Stewardship Guidelines (created by the San Diego Chapter) and will highlight a variety of emerging tools, strategies, assessment metrics, and case studies for Landscape Architects as they demonstrate their leadership as 'Stewards of the Land'. Marum will introduce tools for assessing 'Return-on-Investment' for High Performance Landscapes, will showcase the newly created 'Green Materials Matrix' , will highlight several case studies, and will summarize the on-going research and activities of the Stewardship Committee.

Marian Marum has practiced Landscape Architecture in California for 30 years, founding her own firm in 1984. In that time, she has generated an extensive portfolio of award-winning landscape and urban design projects throughout the San Diego region. Marian earned her LEED AP credential in 2009 and has participated on numerous LEED projects. She continues to demonstrate her commitment to a more sustainable future through her advocacy efforts on the Conservation Action Committee for the County Water Authority; the US Green Building Council; as a liaison to the AIA Committee on the Environment; and through her extensive lectures on high performance and restorative landscapes.

Marum is also the founding Chair of the San Diego ASLA's 'Stewardship Committee', the first such committee in the nation. She has served as President of the San Diego Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects; the State Board of Landscape Architects; and the San Diego Chapter of Partners for Livable Places. Her recent election to the San Diego Regional Sustainability Partnership 'Board' will further her ability to effect positive environmental change in the San Diego region.
