100 at South Broad Chattanooga, Tennessee

This development incorporates a variety of housing connected by a central curbless promenade that serves as a civic space. WMWA collaborated with the developer, architect, and engineers. The promenade also provides automobile access, parking and stores, and infiltrates stormwater. The design, however, focuses on pedestrians and slows vehicular traffic. Chattanooga Creek buffer restoration, pocket parks and resident storage (shipping containers) round out the WMWA site design.

Streamline Broad Street, Chattanooga, Tennessee

Streamline Broad Street re-imagines a new pedestrian and commercial district that emphasizes safety, sustainability and quality of urban design in downtown Chattanooga. Parking and traffic flow are redistributed to optimize car travel lanes, protect cyclists and create larger pedestrian spaces. The added sidewalk area provides space for outdoor cafes, benches, bike parking, newspaper boxes and special events. Bikers have dedicated, separated lanes and queue in front of stopped traffic at intersections. Curb extensions at crosswalks shorten pedestrian travel distances. The redesigned streetscape integrates green infrastructure like porous paving, rain gardens and uncompacted soils to support large canopy trees, all greatly reducing stormwater runoff.

Tennessee Aquarium Conservation Institute Chattanooga, Tennessee

Franklin Architects approached Matt Whitaker within a few months of opening the firm in Chattanooga to bring his expertise in stormwater management and habitat restoration to the new TNACI headquarters planned on the bank of the Tennessee River. The resulting collaboration provides a regional precedent for sustainable design to clients, developers, designers, engineers, and regulatory authorities with its beautiful and functional design. Every drop of water that falls on the site is used to offset building/irrigation water requirements or passes through an extensive treatment train of green infrastructure BMPs to ensure maximum infiltration and treatment.

Founded in 2013, W.M. Whitaker & Associates Landscape Architects (WMWA) provides high quality, regionally significant planning, site design, project administration and consulting. WMWA is committed to excellent design within the context of social and ecological responsibility. Their work reflects an extensive knowledge of ecological systems, the built environment, fiscal responsibility and a collaborative design process. WMWA works across a wide variety of scales and project types and believes this diversity keeps its skills honed. Matt Whitaker is the principal. The firm has three project managers and three project designers.

As seen in LASN magazine, October 2016.
