Advantages of Using LEDs to Decorate Your House

Happy Holidays from everyone at!

One holiday season, National Geographic published an article advocating for the use of LEDs to decorate your home and tree during the holidays. The article cites a statistic given by the U.S. government's ENERGY STAR program, which states, "If all of the holiday bulbs sold this year were energy efficient, it would save 700 million kilowatt hours and the equivalent of greenhouse gas emissions from 100,000 cars."

On the ENERGY STAR's website, they provide a long list of "Decorative Light Strings Qualified Brands" that meet or exceed stringent performance and energy criteria. A few of the brands included in the list are: Walmart, Sam's, Lowe's, Big Lots, National Tree Company and Merry Brite.

Other than saving the environment, another great reason to use LEDs for your holiday lighting is that they actually save you money. Not only are they going to last longer than conventional lights, ( says 50 times longer than typical incandescent and 20-25 times longer than standard halogen bulbs, thus giving you more use out of them and stretching your initial purchase dollars), but they will cost you less in electricity as well.

According to the aforementioned article, "An incandescent holiday light typically needs 7 watts of power, versus .04 watts for an LED version. If the average U.S. household uses a string of 300 lights for 225 hours this season, at a price of 12 cents per kilowatt hour, it would cost close to $57. The same usage for an LED string of lights would cost 32 cents."

Furthermore, an independent study conducted by Andy Prescott of, found that essentially the more you use LEDs the more you save. His tests showed that when he used the LEDs for 1890 hours, he paid just 55 cents for electricity. Although, when he used the regular bulbs for the same amount of time, he ended up paying $10.02. See, using LEDs over conventional options are a great choice for both the environment and your wallet...that way you can spend more money on presents!
