California Park Is Recognized Twice

Pioneer Road Park in Tustin, Calif. has captured two design awards for its blending of history with contemporary playground and recreation elements.

Tustin, Calif.'s Pioneer Road Park has captured two national awards for landscape architect David Volz. The park, which includes a picnic area, two age-designated play areas, basketball, volleyball and walking trail facilities, opened last May.

The awards include the American Public Works Association, Southern California Chapter's Project of the Year for 2004 and the National Recreation and Parks Association's Park Design Award for 2004.

Only nine parks in the United States received the latter award in 2004, firm principal David Volz told Landscapeonline.com. (Pioneer Road Park, it turns out, is located a short distance from LASN's editorial offices in the City of Tustin.)

Tustin City Council Member Tony Kawashima and Parks and Recreation director Pat Sanchez accepted the APWA award at the group's annual awards ceremony in December.

The park was custom designed for residents-using their input gathered at several design workshops. Its pioneer theme memorializes local history-the community was founded in 1868 by Columbus Tustin, a Philadelphia farmer and land speculator.

The facility "is quite an accomplishment," Kawashima said. "As we developed (the plans), we had an active community assisting us at workshops and through public comment."

Parks and recreation director Sanchez praised the park's blending of history with modern playground elements.

"The crowning feature of Pioneer Park is the Watering Hole, where park visitors can play amid water spray," he said. "In keeping with its pioneer theme, the park also includes three covered wagons with climbing and other play features to encourage frontier adventure play for children and a quarter-mile exercise trail designed with a rustic feel."

David Volz Design is based in Fountain Valley, Calif. and specializes in playgrounds and parks projects. The firm's website is at www.dvolzdesign.com.
