Two grants are about to pave the way for West Atlantic Avenue's median landscape beautification project and new road construction on Douglas Avenue, an unpaved road located between Southwest Fourth and Southwest 10th avenues in the city's Southridge neighborhood.

The Douglas Avenue project will feature infrastructure improvements, including a new asphalt street, storm water drainage and a new sewer main, as part of the city’s community revitalization project. The contract will cost $90,000, and construction is expected to begin by late April and conclude
by July.

In January, officials said that $100,000 had been allocated from the city’s Community Development Block Grant for road construction and infrastructure improvements along Douglas Avenue. City officials believe the project will contribute to the neighborhood’s continuing revitalization.

In addition, the West Atlantic Avenue gateway into the city’s downtown will soon have a new look. The median beautification project is entering the final construction-ideas phase, with documents and submissions up for approval by the city during the next two months. Funds for the project are set to come from a non-matching $200,000 Metropolitan Planning Organization Grant that was obtained last May, and a $70,000 contribution from the Community Redevelopment Agency.
