Frederick Ward Associates
Bel Air, Maryland

FWA's first 25 years in business focused on surveying, civil engineering, and land planning services. In 1980, the company broadened its horizons by starting an architecture studio, which currently centers on the educational, commercial/industrial and institutional markets. During the late 1980's as site development became increasingly complex, they added an environmental science division that included landscape architecture, consultants for wetland issues, critical area assessment, environmental site assessments and hazardous waste management. The landscape architectural division assists in aesthetically integrating continuous changes to an environment whose perpetuation and preservation are vital, providing services for residential, commercial, industrial, park and recreational projects, streetscapes and revitalization efforts.

Rekord Armory Park, Bel Air, Md.

Just a block down from their office, this project was especially meaningful as it boasts a pocket park dedicated to Frederick Y. Ward, founder of the firm, whose landscape design team was responsible for the landscape, seating and paver areas, and a stage that includes a wall mounted trellis system. All upgrades including enhancements to the historic Armory building and adaptive reuse of the former garage were designed in alignment with Maryland Historic Trust requirements and incorporated green improvements such as permeable pavers, green wall, ample softscape, minimal direct lighting and renewable materials.
