Genuine Donation of Synthetic Playing Field

Non-Profit organization Synthetic Turf Council (STC) donates 13,200 square feet of grass-like synthetic turf playing surface to Stuart-Hobson Middle School in Washington, D.C.

Stuart-Hobson Middle School of Washington, D.C., is the recipient of a new synthetic playing field from the Synthetic Turf Council, a non-profit trade association. The previous asphalt playground at the middle school limited students in playing team sports and their level of fitness activity.

“Although Stuart-Hobson has an incredible athletic program, we’ve lacked outside practice fields for our players,” said Principal Dawn Clemens. “This new synthetic turf field will help all of our students increase their physical activity levels.”

According to the Centers for Disease Control approximately 17% of children and adolescents are obese. With programs such as Let’s Move and the CDC’s Childhood Obesity Demonstration Project children are encouraged to play outside, however often times kids don’t have a place for such activity.

The Synthetic Turf Council represents the first industry-wide collaboration and offers a solution for this nation-wide problem. Their initiative depicts how private industry can make a difference in the drive for increased childhood fitness. President of the Synthetic Turf Council, Rick Doyle said in a news release “We are committed to community wellness and environmental responsibility through the use of synthetic turf. Our members enthusiastically came together to build a field that increases opportunities for Stuart-Hobson students to be active and play outside.”

Synthetic turf is an eco-friendly solution that conservations more than six billion gallons of water annually and eliminates the use of harmful pesticides and fertilizers. Currently over 6,000 schools and community parks in the U.S. and Canada have installed synthetic turf and surely there are more to follow.
