GM Reinforces Commitment to Autonomous Vehicles

According to MarketWatch, the North American market led in automotive artificial intelligence in 2018, followed by Europe. The Asia-Pacific Market, which placed third on the list, is currently the fastest growing region for the technology.

General Motors Co. just released their annual sustainability report that lists "the aggressive moves the company made in 2018 to achieve its vision of a world with zero crashes, zero emissions and zero congestion."

Titled "Transformation in Progress," one of its highlighted points was that the company's autonomous vehicles drove 3.5 times more miles in 2018 than in the previous year, underscoring the progress they are making toward a commercial rollout of AVs, which they say is a key part of their "zero-crashes vision." On top of that, $5 billion of external investment was secured to further GM's AV program.

The company also reported that they will double their AV and EV engineering resources in the next two years, 75% of their engineering workforce will be assigned to work on clean energy technologies, and that Cadillac will be their lead brand for electric vehicle technology.

In other sustainability news, the report stated that 20% GM's electricity needs are being handled by renewable energy and the goal is to increase that share to 100% by 2050.
