Green Roof Awards of Excellence

Intensive Industrial / Commercial_Project: 601 Congress Street, Seaport District, Boston, Massachusetts_Award Winner: Sasaki Associates, Inc., Watertown, Massachusetts

Seven outstanding green roof design teams received Green Roof Awards of Excellence for their exceptional projects from Green Roofs for Healthy Cities at its annual conference. The designers were recognized at the 4th Greening Rooftops for Sustainable Communities conference and tradeshow, which attracted over 800 attendees and 70 exhibitors in Boston, MA for a week of professional development, tours and exhibits.

Green Roof Awards of Excellence celebrate projects that are holistically designed and provide benefits in terms of the function of the building, its relation to the site and surrounding community. The award winners are as follows:

  • Eco Housing Corporation, Bethesda, MD for Eastern Village Condominiums in Silver Springs, MD; Extensive Residential Category
  • American Hydrotech, Chicago, IL for the Ballard Library in Seattle, WA;
    Extensive Institutional Category
  • The Kestrel Design Group, Inc., Minneapolis, MN for the Phillips Eco-Enterprise Center in Minneapolis, MN; Extensive Industrial/Commercial Category
  • Jeffrey L. Bruce & Co., North Kansas City, MO for Seapointe Village Deck Restoration, Wildwood Crest, NJ; Intensive Residential Category
  • Mashantucket Pequot Museum & Research Center, Mashantucket, CT for Mashantucket Pequot Museum & Research Center, Mashantucket, CT; Intensive Institutional Category
  • Sasaki Associates, Inc., Watertown, MA for 601 Congress Street, Seaport District, Boston, MA; Intensive Industrial/Commercial Category
  • Koch Landscape Architects, Portland, OR for 10th @ Hoyt Apartments, an apartment courtyard project that was an excellent blend of aesthetics using stormwater; Special Recognition Category.

The Civic Award of Excellence was presented to the deputy Mayor of the City of Toronto, Joe Pantalone for his work to conduct holistic cost benefit research on widespread green roof infrastructure implementation and his leadership in implementing a wide range of policy and program support.

The Research Award of Excellence was presented to David Beattie, Associate Professor of Ornamental Horticulture and Founder of the Penn State Center for Green Roof Research, the first such research facility in the United States.
