Land Planning & Design Associates, Inc. (LPDA),
Charlottesville and Sterling, Va.

Founded in 1970 by then UVA Landscape Architecture Department Head Harry Porter, LPDA has continued a tradition of making places for people for 40 years. The portfolio includes parks and recreation, trails and greenways, downtown revitalization, urban design, mixed use communities, DoD, education and health care. LPDA provides services focused on LEED certification, the Sustainable Sites Initiative, intensive and extensive green roof design, LID design, native landscapes and reforestation projects.

LPDA’s service region encompasses Md., Va., W.Va. and North Carolina, with professionals licensed in each state. William Mechnick, ASLA is president and leads the firm. Partners John Schmidt, ASLA and Zachary Lette, ASLA manage the Charlottesville and Sterling offices, respectively.

Current projects include Rockingham Memorial Hospital Healing Gardens in Harrisonburg, Va.; Tobacco Heritage Trail, Southside Va.; Hilton Commons, Newport News, Va.; Ivy Creek Park, Lynchburg, Va.; Quiet Waters, Annapolis, Md.; Preston Lakes, Harrisonburg, Va.; and Air National Guard Headquarters, Andrews AFB, Arlington, Va.

Alan B. Pearson Regional Cancer Center, Lynchburg, Va.

LPDA prepared site master planning and landscape architecture services for the Alan Pearson Regional Cancer Center site, including the healing garden and main entry area. The healing garden is a palette of serenity and peace, a mixture of yellows, creams, blues, and lavenders, accented with scarlet, reds and the rich greens of the structural plantings. Water, stone, wood, sculpture, landforms, and soft plantings are used to create comfortable environments.


Jamestown Entrance Plaza, James City County, Va.

This museum of 17th-century American history and culture is adjacent to the entrance of the original Jamestown settlement. LPDA prepared design concepts and final construction plans for the main visitor entrance plaza. Program elements include a flag lawn, fountain, café area, bus drop-off and pedestrian promenade. The preservation of historic oaks was an integral component, providing a dramatic gateway to the museum entrance.

A Dream Come True Playground, Harrisonburg, Va.

This universally-accessible playground has arching pathways with multiple colors and textures and curvilinear planting areas. There are two large areas of play equipment, a picnic and shelter zone with game tables, swings for all levels, a sensory garden, an imagination area with play houses and barn, a fire station and fire house, an ice cream shop, a weather station with working equipment, a shaded gathering area, a colorful wall for drawing, a seat wall filled with textural items, a faux rock sensory wall and water feature, a garden trellis tunnel, a rainbow gate and a ball toss and game area.


Historic Court Square, Woodstock, Va.

Historic Court Square in Woodstock (Shenandoah Valley) had fallen into disrepair. This was where Peter Muhlenburg made his famous call to arms during the build-up to the Revolutionary War. LPDA prepared detailed master plans and construction drawings for the area around the courthouse building and the intersection of Court and Main. The design included a courthouse plaza and interior pedestrian spaces.
The streetscape received new light fixtures, trees and traffic-calming measures. Plaques integrated into the ground plane depict historic events in and around Woodstock.



Harwood Mill Athletic Complex, York County, Va..

LPDA did the master planning, hardscape and landscape design of an athletic park and recreation area for York County at Harwood Mill Reservoir. The park allows for expansion of four multi-use fields.
The site’s multiple wetlands, utility easements, buffers and flight-line restrictions drove the master plan. The final plan included little league fields, softball and baseball fields, soccer fields, pedestrian trails, playgrounds, LID features, a maintenance facility and multiple concessions and comfort stations.
