The Westchester and Watson Place, Washington, D.C.

The Westchester is one of the oldest luxury cooperatives in the D.C. area. The complex, planned in 1929, called for eight apartment buildings set on 28 park-like acres overlooking the city and the Potomac. Construction began in 1930 and landscape architects assisted from the beginning. A quadrangle with a tiered sunken garden and an alley of cedars was planned as a focal point and gathering space. The Great Depression halted construction in 1931, with only four buildings completed. Occupancy began in 1931 and the complex became a co-op in 1953.
Watson Place was built in the 1960s and completed the series of façades surrounding the alley and sunken garden. The owners have a 10-year master plan and landscape maintenance schedule to help unify Westchester and Watson Place. The plan includes irrigation, drainage, hardscape and grading.
LS provided both facilities with a master plan and options for plant material.
