Castle Hill Inn, Newport, R.I.

The patio is terraced into three different levels to accommodate the steeply sloping grade. The terraces are separated by sets of large granite steps and small planters with ornamental grasses and perennials.

Birchwood Design Group designed the landscape architecture for an expanded outdoor dining area at the Castle Hill Inn in Newport, R.I. Proposed within the confines of an existing outdoor dining area, the steep terrain and presence of ledges created challenges for the designers and contractors. BDG's goal was to create as little disturbance to the surrounding landscape as possible. The patio is terraced into three different levels to accommodate the steeply sloping grade. The terraces are separated by sets of large granite steps and small planters with ornamental grasses and perennials. Low seat walls with granite field stone veneers and solid bluestone caps surround the dining area. Together, the stone wall edges, bluestone paving, ornamental grasses and lawn enhance this new premier dining experience along Narragansett Bay.

Somerset Berkeley Regional High School, Somerset, Mass.

Birchwood Design Group provided site design services for the new 30-acre Somerset Berkley Regional High School campus. The project included replacing and relocating the existing track, field, bleachers, storage, baseball, softball and multiuse fields and the tennis courts. A new multisport synthetic turf field with grandstands and an ADA accessible press box is the focal point of the new track and field facility. A new six-lane, equal quadrant track with an eight-lane straightaway surrounds the field, and includes high jump, triple jump and long jump areas. BDG worked with the design team to address complicated site topography and construction phasing at the new model school. Birchwood Design Group is currently in the construction administration phase of the project.

American Locomotive Company, Providence, R.I.

American Locomotive Works is a 10-acre multiphase historic renovation project on the west side of the city of Providence. Originally, the complex was the headquarters of the company's auto manufacturing facility. With the assistance of the Historic Tax Credit and visionary developers, the run-down complex was converted to a mixed-use facility with office and restaurant space. Birchwood Design Group assisted the developer in creating a cohesive campus-like landscape and improving selected areas around the site, integrating it into the adjacent urban coastal greenway.
