The American Society of Golf Course Architects has elected Ken Killian as president. Immediate Past President John Watson, of Lachute, Quebec, presented the gavel of office to Killian at the society’s annual meeting at Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra, Florida. Killian, who operates design offices in Palatine, Illinois and Los Angeles, California, is co-designer of Kemper Lakes course in Long Grove, Illinois, site of the 1989 PGA championship.

Kurt Maloney

The Irrigation Division of the Toro Company has appointed Kurt Maloney as residential marketing manager. Maloney’s new responsibilities include directing product development and promotional programs, and creating activities to support custom and homeowner installed residential underground sprinkler systems. Maloney has been with Toro since 1975.

Betty Slayter has been appointed as membership services coordinator for the Calitornia Landecape Contractore Association. Slayter’s responsibilities include serving as receptionist and processing incoming mail, membership records and applications for membership.

Rain Bird Sales, Inc. has formed a new Tampa inside sales team with the appointment of team members Bob Hall and Elena Lundy. They will be responsible for providing support to Rain Bird district managers in the territories east of the Mississippi River. Halls territory is Florida and Lundy is responsible for the remaining Eastern states.

Landscape Architect and Environmental Designer Lawrence Halprin, is this year’s recipient of the Richard Neutra Award from the School of Environmental Design at Cal Poly Ponoma. Halprin’s work is noted for its quality and avant garde approach. His projects have included San Francisco’s Ghiradelli Square, Nicollet Mall in Minneapolis, Portland Oregon’s series of plazas, Seattle Freeway Park and the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial in Washington D.C. He is also the author of seven books and two films…

Peridian Group announces Michael McKay, ASLA and Frank Marczynski, ASLA, as the new principals in the firm. McKay is a 1976 graduate of California State Polytechnic University at Pomona and has been employed with Peridian since his graduation. Marczynski is a 1978 graduate of Michigan State University. He joined Peridian in 1980 and has managed the firm’s San Diego office since its establishment in late 1984.

Warren’s Turf Nursery, Inc. has recognized the following as its top performers: Bob Swain, Tom Lynch, Frank Berns, Emory Hunter and Steve Stone. Awards were presented at the company’s annual kick-off conference in Napa, California.

Roy C. Ontiveros has joined the Pacific Sod organization as a turfgrass advisor and technical representative in Los Angeles, Riverside and San Bernardino counties in California. A career professional in the green industries for the past 18 years, Ontiveros previously was employed by Kellog Supply, Inc., where he served institutional customers as a turfgrass and landscape consultant. Ontiveros has experience as an instructor at California State Polytechnic University at Pomona in the landscape certification program and is also a licensed pest control applicator and an agricultural pest, control advisor.

Michael Hannon has been appointed communications assistant for the CLCA. Hannon will assist in the writing and layout of brochures, news releases and other promotional materials. She will also serve as assistant editor of CLCA publications. Hannon has experience in graphic design and a recent graduate of Chico State University with a B.A.

Steve J. McLaughlin

Steve J. McLaughlin has been appointed sales representative for A-G Sod Farms, Inc. He will represent the company in Southern California. McLaughlin has been associated with the sod and landscape industry in California since 1978 and has a B.A. degree in economics from the University of Massachusetts, Boston.

Mike Baron

David G. Wneeler

Mike Baron has been appointed residential market manager and, David G. Wneeler has been appointed industrial market manager of the Turf Division of Rain Bird Sales, Inc. Baron, who joined Rain Bird in 1980 as turf marketing coordinator, most recently held the position of senior product manager of the Turf Division. Since 1981, Wheeler has served as district manager, area specifications manager and, most recently, eastern regional sales manager for Rain Bird.

Valley Crest Tree Company has named Joyce Powers as marketing coordinator. Powers is a California, Certified Nurserywoman, and has participated in sales and marketing since joining the company in 1983. Her new responsibilities will include coordination of the advertising campaign, displays, merchandising and publicity. Valley Crest Tree Co. also announces that Susie Flores, sales representative, has been elected to serve as the new secretary to the, Turf and Landscape Council. It is a two year office which includes in its responsibilities the writing and editing of the monthly newsletter.

Steve Teeple

Steve Teeple has been appointed to national sales manager for Warren’s Turf. Teeple is relatively new to the turfgrass business, with a background primarily in the materials handling industry office will be at the corporate headquarters in Crystal Lake, Illinois.

Brent C. Holden, president of Southern California Organic Fertilizer Co., Inc., presented The Class Fund with a $1000 donation in memory of Carrol E. Raines, an affiliate member of the ASLA who died in 1981 after 15 years of industry-wide contributions.
