Now Is a Great Time to Get Involved

By George Schmok

Well...It's almost July and by now you should have received the 2004 LCN Buyer's Guide and are keeping that issue in the office or in the truck and are finding it useful. That annual issue has become quite a project for LCN and we are always looking for ways to make it better, so if you have any suggestions on how we can improve its usefulness, please be sure to let us know. We are already in the planning stages for the 2005 edition...

With summer upon us and your workloads at capacity, I understand you are in need of focusing on laying pipe, building berms and staking trees. The last thing you need is to shift that focus and lose work, miss opportunities or let your projects fall behind schedule... just so happens that now is also the time to talk about the political landscape. In the months ahead the battle for the White House and the direction of the country will unfold with many consequences for the landscape construction industry. As landscape contractors and business owners you need solid representation at all levels of government.

Many important issues will be debated and decided upon in the national, state and local arenas over the next several years, and this year's elections will definitely have an impact on the industry.

At the national level, the highway bills, infrastructure rebuilding, EPA concerns and immigration will all be topics of concern in the years ahead. Foreign demand for steel and lumber and how the U.S. deals with tariffs and imports will also affect your work and the cost of your materials and equipment.

Workers' comp. and the licensure of landscape maintenance professionals will be making their way into the workings of state governments in 2005. Meanwhile, local governments will be trying to protect the citizenry with landscape ordinances and regulations that could, for instance, force you to go back to sweeping sidewalks and raking leaves.

Sure, you could leave it to the associations to make your case. But even they need your input and participation. It won't do you any good to wait until the decisions have been made to start complaining about the outcomes...Now is just the right time to get involved...

As such and as always, LCN is interested in what you are doing, so please let us know if you are participating in an active way in shaping this country. We'd love to hear (and report) your story. We also want to hear your agenda and the causes you feel will affect your industry and your lives. So be sure to use the response cards on page 64 to let us know...and be sure to take the time to make an impact at whatever level you can...

In the meantime, have a great summer and, as always...God Bless!
