NYC's Excellence in Design Awards
Creating Public Spaces of Resilience and Access

NYC's Excellence in Design Awards

The projects of the New York City's Excellence in Design awards work to make public spaces more resilient and accessible, and are judged by the Public Design Commission's 11-member panel.

Several projects have been honored by the Public Design Commission for New York City's Excellence in Design awards.

This year's winners include:
• The Peninsula Mixed-Use Development
• Third Street Men's Shelter Garden and Greenhouse
• Queens Boulevard Reconstruction
• Gowanus Combined Sewer Overflow Facility and Open Space
• Bay Breeze Park

These award-winning designs aimed to provide open spaces for the public such as transforming an empty lot into a garden and greenhouse for a men's homeless shelter and setting up undeveloped land into a summer recreational space. Some of these projects focus on designing for horticulture and wellness, pedestrian and streetscape safety, recreational activities, and/or sustainability.

The Public Commissions also honored women who have significantly contributed in New York City, by highlighting award-winning projects since 2009 that were led by women architects, engineers, designers and artists. This recognition is presented in a new book entitled "Women-Design NYC."
