Parks & Patio Beautifies TNLA

Texas, the Lone Star State, is certainly big enough to stand alone, and Texans themselves are BIG on state pride. This Texas shaped arrangement designed by students from Sam Houston State University is visible as attendees enter the
exhibit hall.

The Texas Nursery & Landscape Association (TNLA) Expo began Friday, August 17th at the George R. Brown Convention Center in Houston. The education conference and expo will last until Sunday, August 19th.

Every square inch of the exhibit hall is filled, not only with exhibitors, but also ''beautified empty spaces''. Parks & Patio, a volunteer based organization began installing landscaped exhibits on Monday, four days before the show was to begin, with a total of 30 volunteers per day.

Joseph Johnson, Director of Horticulture at Shangri La Botanical Gardens & Nature Center and Parks & Patio said, ''This is our 21st year landscaping areas on the show floor, volunteers range from students to TNLA association members.''

Johnson explained that each year a different group of students from surrounding colleges either in Landscape Architect or Horticultural programs designs the areas. The students receive a list of ''empty spaces'' that need to be beautified, along with dimensions, and then get to work. The goal is for each area to look like a landscaped yard.

The materials are donated or loaned from exhibitors and local nurseries, which receive a ''call for materials'' from Parks & Patio. Many of the landscaped exhibits are rest areas for attendees with benches, fountains and manicured landscapes.

After the show the donated plant materials and designed installations go to non-profit organizations, such as Habitat for Humanity or Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Baytown, Texas.
