Perennial Plant Initiative Continues to Grow

ThinkPlants was developed to offer growers a strong commitment to breeding a diverse mix of improved plant genetics, with a healthy supply chain of top-quality URC, bareroot, liners, bulbs and seed. Each participant attests to bring expertise in plant breeding, supply chain and technical support, and the initiative centralizes a cooperative marketing and supply strategy.

Last July, ThinkPlantsa,,? was launched as a new marketing initiative to represent exceptional perennial plants to the North American nursery industry. Founding partners Danziger and Syngenta Flowers North America, announced this endeavor at Cultivate 2018, and since then it has continued to expand and add participants. Through this collaboration, the two growers offer their respective perennial portfolios in the United States and Canada. Both companies are actively breeding new perennial lines and have new products being trialed by growers.

Next to join the family were Kapiteyn and Unex from Holland.  These two participants helped to round out the initiatives perennial offering by diversifying not only the genetic offering, but also the input type. With these participants, the offering of perennials went from URC and seed options to also offering bare root, bulbs and tubers. Kapiteyn b.v. of Breezand, the Netherlands, the breeder and supplier of Captain Callas, provides top-quality bulbs to the program. Unex USA, LLC, a supplier of Bare-root perennials and bulbs out of Holland, offers to North America top quality bare root perennials and bulbs.

With the addition of KiwiFlora genetics to the family of products, the initiative began to expand breeder relationships to New Zealand and has gained some exceptional Dianthus genetics. KiwiFlora, a global plant variety management company out of New Zealand, will add the Dianthus 'Scent From Heaven' series to the lineup.

Most recently, it was announced that Terra Nova Nurseries, a world leader in perennial breeding that has brought the horticulture market more than 1,000 varieties and 30-plus national and international award-winning introductions, is joining the initiative. This addition dramatically broadens the perennial genus available via the group and supplied as URC out of Danziger Guatemala.

The organization will be at Cultivate '19, Booth #1525, July 13-16, 2019 at the Greater Columbus Convention Center, Columbus, Ohio, and they will also be displaying new participant products at the MANTS tradeshow in Baltimore Maryland in January of 2020.
