Fairfax Boulevard Commerce Corridor, Charles Town and Ranson, W. Va.

Originally planned as a part of the two towns' master plans prepared in 1892, Fairfax Boulevard was going to be the primary civic artery connecting the two towns into a single functioning unit. After more than one hundred years, the two towns recognized the need to finally implement the notion of the original vision in a manner that served modern needs. Stromberg / Garrigan & Associates served as the lead landscape architects and urban designers for the 1.1-mile corridor reconstruction as a new street facility with extensive green infrastructure. Extensive use of Best Management Practices (BMPs) included passive treatment bioswales in medians, structural soil cells under sidewalks and modular flow-through planters, along with extensive naturalized plantings. The $12M project received two U.S. DOT TIGER grants and was the recipient of two Phoenix Awards at the 2013 U.S. EPA National Brownfields Conference held in Atlanta, Ga.

Historic Union Station, Connellsville, Pa.

A financial institution located in Connellsville, Pa., Somerset Trust Company, retained Stromberg / Garrigan & Associates to assist in repurposing the historic 1914 train station as commercial banking and retail complex. The firm prepared landscape architectural plans in conformance with historic tax credit requirements that created a cohesive complex that functions as a place for commerce during weekdays and as a public plaza for special events on weekends. The A 1/2 -acre project includes extensive hardscaping with repurposed 100-year old clay pavers as well as historic interpretive elements including special fencing and lighting that evokes the razed elevated rail platforms through the site.

Trinity Park, Somerset, Pa.

Located in the small mountain town of Somerset, Penn., Trinity Park is a 1/8-acre pocket park developed by the non-profit Main Street organization, Somerset Inc., that is focused on downtown economic development. The site was a former church that burned in the 1960s and was selected for its close proximity to recently redeveloped historic mixed-use structures. Stromberg / Garrigan & Associates developed a design which repurposed local materials including 100-year-old former street pavers that were to be discarded and brick salvaged from the former church, as a lush civic venue for informal and programmed events led by the Somerset Inc. The design incorporates an intricate storm water management regime that captures rainwater from adjacent roofs and conveys it into a central focal planting area.
