ALEXANDRIA, Va.--The National Stone, Sand and Gravel Association (NSSGA) has named Terry Tyson of Hanson Building Materials America, Inc., in San Diego, Calif., the "2003 James M. Christie Safety and Health Professional of the Year." The coveted award will be presented at the association's Environmental, Safety and Health Forum in Phoenix, Ariz., in September. The safety award was created in 1987 to provide national recognition to an individual in the aggregates industry for superior and substantial contributions. Tyson is the regional director of safety for Hanson Aggregates, Pacific Southwest Region, which employs approximately 700 workers at 29 quarry and plant operations. With 19 years in the mining, plant operations and transportation safety fields, Tyson is recognized as an outstanding safety and health expert within Hanson America and within the aggregates and mining industries. He is actively involved in the NSSGA's Noise and Dust Monitoring workshops, hosting two events at Hanson operations in 2002 and 2003. "Terry's generous safety assistance to other mining companies truly makes him worthy of this honor," said Diane Fionda, safety director of TXI Riverside Cement, in a letter recommending Terry for the honor. "His dedication to worker health and safety extends to the entire industry," said Joy Wilson, president and CEO of NSSGA.
