The ELA Hosts Educational Events

Ecological Landscaping Association

The Ecological Landscaping Association (ELA) will host three new educational events:

Schoolyard Restoration: Landscapes for Learning

Engagement with the natural world is the heart of Ruth Parnal's design work. ''Children need ''learningful'' landscapes in which they can investigate, manage, and restore natural process. The schoolyard that is devoted to habitat and problem- solving becomes an engaging and language-rich environment for children and teachers alike. It serves all aspects of curriculum, conveys the message of caring for nature and children, restores attention, and allows for play, inquiry, and reflection.''

Guide: Ruth Parnall, Learning by the Yard
Tuesday, July 10, 2012
11:15 AM - 2:00 PM
Milton and Jamaica Plain, MA
$20.00 ELA Member or $25 Non-Member

Design Inspirations from New England's Wild Landscapes

Recapture the flavor of your favorite part of New England by designing a native plant community into your garden. The lecture will include several examples of local naturalistic landscapes, some wild sites that ''just grew'', some managed natural landscapes, and some that were designed as a recreation of a woodland, seacoast, or meadow location.

Instructor: Laura Eisener, landscape designer, Laura D. Eisener Landscape Design

Tuesday, July 10, 2012
7:00 - 9:00 PM
Framingham, MA
$24.00 ELA Member or $29 Non-Member

Boston Nature Center: Urban Restoration

Located in Mattapan and surrounded by residential neighborhoods in the city of Boston, Audubon's Boston Nature Center (BNC) is a 67-acre oasis and landscape restoration success story. Formerly the site of the Boston State Hospital, this restoration has transformed BNC into open space and natural habitats including more than two miles of trails and boardwalks through meadows, fresh-water marsh, woodlands, and gardens.
