Unemployment Rises in 23 States in September

Ohio lost about 6,000 jobs in September, but its jobless rate dropped to 10.1 percent. This curious result is apparently the result of discouraged workers leaving the work force.

The GM job losses in Michigan gives this state of 10 million the onerous number one spot on the highest unemployment rate list in the U.S. Nevada (13.3 percent), Rhode Island (13 percent), California (12.2 percent) and South Carolina (11.6 percent) round out the "top" five.

Florida's jobless rate rose to 11 percent from 10.8 percent in August, the result of a loss of nearly 13,000 construction jobs.
California lost 39,300 jobs, including more than 14,000 in construction. Nevada lost 3,500 construction jobs, though it boosted employment in services.

Ohio lost about 6,000 jobs in September, but its jobless rate actually dropped to 10.1 percent, compared to 10.8 percent in August and 11.2 percent in July.

How's that? The improvement in the unemployment rate is attributed to discouraged workers leaving the work force.

Good news elsewhere in the Midwest is Indiana gaining about 4,400 jobs, dropping the jobless rate to 9.6 percent, compared to 9.9 percent in August and 10.7 percent in June.
