Helen Diller Playground San Francisco, California
Helen Diller Playground, a $3.5 million installation in Mission Dolores Park overlooking downtown San Francisco, replaced a small play area built in the 1920s and haphazardly maintained for most of a century. Today, the playground spans one acre and features multiple levels, slides, a 60-foot-long pedestrian bridge and customized musical play equipment.

Deicke Park Discovery Zone

The fabulous Deicke Park Discovery Zone is in Huntley, Ill., a village about 50 miles northwest of Chicago. This panorama does not reveal the full playground, but we see the village (front right), the music area (center), the school play area (top), Bankshot play (top left), and the train/fire truck area (left). There are hundreds of feet of block seat walls that also act as planters and supports for the murals and blackboard. Concrete walks circle the playground's inner core to facilitate wheel chair travel, with four-way stop signs at intersections. Picnic tables (Wabash Valley) with shades are among the adult amenities.

Special Report: Equipment Roundup
Bobcat upgraded its 700 M-Series (S770 shown here) loaders with improved performance, monitoring and emissions controls. These changes incorporate greater machine performance through increased breakout and lift forces, better horsepower management, shorter cycle times and simplified display navigation. Upgraded loader features apply key interim Tier 4 (iT4) technologies to provide enhanced loader functionality for machines ranging from 75 to 174 horsepower.

The Children's Movement
Neptune Park in Saratoga Springs, Utah, is home to one of the tallest safety‐certified play structures in North America, Berliner Seilfabrik's 30'-2" Neptun XXL climber. The landscape architect chose the structure to mirror the mountainous natural features that surround Saratoga Springs.

Serenbe--New Urbanism in the Piedmont

Serenbe was the first "hamlet" built in Chattahoochee Hills, a small city of 2,378 people living on 32,000 acres southwest of Atlanta on the northwest side of the Chattahoochee River. The Chattahoochee Hills plan calls for preservation of a minimum of 70 percent of its acreage.

Hardscapes for the Playspace
Surfacing is a paramount concern for landscape architects, as increased regulations for fall safety and the danger of litigation can threaten ill-considered projects. Hardscape materials can play a key role, inspiring active play and supporting safety surfacing beneath playground equipment. Here, a low retaining wall (Granite Blend Anchor Highland Stone(R), Pavestone) corrals soft safety material under a small play structure and swing set.

States Divert Fed Funds for
Trails & Landscaping
Funding mandates for "alternative" transportation projects like recreational trails, landscaping and other pedestrian enhancements were diluted in the federal government's July infrastructure bill, MAP-21. Now, governors in Florida and Kansas have opted to divert that money away from those programs altogether, sending it to their state's general transportation fund.

Distressed Home Sales Fall, Prices Grow
Less bank-owned homes and those in some stage of foreclosure were sold in the second quarter, according to an industry tracking firm. However, the share of distressed homes grew in the housing market in the second quarter, and prices for those homes increased, as lenders slowly release their backlog of homes into the market to maximize value.
