Get Pesticide Certification In North Carolina

Landscape contractors and homeowners in North Carolina who apply pesticides may need a pesticide certification, says the N.C. Cooperative Extension. The Private Pesticide Applicator Certification monitored by the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Affairs enables applicators to purchase and apply restricted-use pesticides for their own use. Pesticides have strict usage labeling guidelines and require applicators to have a greater knowledge of its use and effects.

Protecting Plants Against Winter Cold

With winter 2013 upon us, experts say that now is the time to prepare for cold protection for tender landscape plants. Before your clients' yard becomes a winter wonderland, brush up on the basics for keeping plants protected from winter frost.

Add Color to Landscape In Winter
With careful planning and selection, winter can be one of the more colorful times for a landscape. With less competition from leafy green plants, those with colorful berries, interesting bark, striking flowers and foliage become more noticeable. And winter is the ideal season to plant these colorful options. Below are some good choices for your clients' winter landscape choices.

Low Snow Winter?
Many landscape contractors who operate in snowfall areas supplement their landscape installation business with snow removal in the winter. 2011 was a terrible year for them, and while it's impossible to predict the remainder of the 2013 winter, so far snowfall has been low.

Construction Adds December Jobs, Industry Unemployment High

Residential construction outpaced nonresidential construction in December, the former adding 18,100 jobs compared to 11,900 for the latter. Residential construction employment is now up by 29,800 jobs compared to 12 months ago, while nonresidential contractors are down 12,400 jobs since December 2011.

Colorado's Healthcare Building Boom

Construction Material Costs Decline in November
Construction input prices - for raw materials and related project essentials - fell 1.1 percent in November month-over-month, led by declines in diesel fuel, steel, copper and aluminum. A survey of nearly 600 construction firms released by the AGC in December indicated that many firms have already cut back on investments in construction equipment and supplies to prepare for the new year.

Water, Water Everywhere

The fountain circle covers a 12-foot radius, and is made from Ancient Stone pavers installed over concrete. Workers built the fountain tower using CMU block construction, and then covered it with faux stone veneer and precast concrete scuppers. The stainless steel cap was placed on top of the precast concrete and to finish the area, sandblast-finished precast-concrete bollards surrounding the circle were installed.

Lighting Up D.C.
Overall, the company pulled more than 1,000 linear feet of 16/2 wire to power the LED low-voltage system. Technicians made sure to pull an individual wire run from each fixture to its corresponding transformer. As the contractor explained, ''The wiring was installed under the deck and to prevent reduction in down time if a fixture had a problem.''

Elements in the Residential Landscape

While the four other residential projects featured in this issue focus on the entirety of a residential design, this feature is a collage of selected elements of seven residential projects submitted to LASN for feature consideration. In essence, we selected certain eye-catching elements of each residence to showcase. The elements include pools, waterfalls, entryways, outdoor living areas, hardscaping and, of course, landscaping.
