Grady Clay, 96, a journalist and a leading national authority on urban design who wrote for The Courier-Journal and became the executive editor of Landscape Architecture Magazine (LAM), passed away Sunday, March 17, 2013 after developing a blood clot.

Nat'l Parks Fear Budget Holdbacks
"Congress gets quite a bang for its buck with the park system. The budget is $2 billion and the nation receives a $31 billion annual return on its investment, along with 258,000 jobs per year."-- John Garder, budget and appropriations legislative representative for the National Parks Conservation Association.

A Commitment to Parks: Kirkwood, Missouri

Kirkwood, Missouri is one of the most sought after communities in which to live and raise children in the St. Louis area. This community has long been known for its charm, high quality schools, vibrant downtown main street business community and, most of all, for its parks. To continue the quality and growth of its parks, the Kirkwood Park Board embarked in 2004 on an ambitious plan to develop a needs analysis and 10-year comprehensive master plan for its 325-acre park system.

This view of Lone Mountain Regional Park Area II is looking east from the west side of the park to the Las Vegas Valley, a 600 sq. mile basin that encompass the three largest incorporated cities in Nevada (Las Vegas, North Las Vegas, Henderson), and six unincorporated cities (Enterprise, Paradise, Spring Valley, Sunrise Manor, Whitney and Winchester). In 1990, the metropolitan area population was at 741,459; over the next 20 years, the population grew to about 2 million people.

The Case for High-Res, Multispectral Aerial Imagery of Large Landscapes

At the Medallion Club near Columbus, Ohio, AES scientists used basic aerial imagery to detect places where fairway construction had broken historic farm field drain tiles, causing flooding and drainage of adjacent wetlands. The situation burgeoned into a dispute with the EPA. Imagery was used to help resolve the dilemma and avoid potential fines for unplanned wetland damages.

New Economy Landscaping Trends

"The biggest overall (home) trend is that people are cocooning -- people are staying at home and creating multi-use spaces," said landscape architect Mark White, owner of Garden Wise in Arlington. "They want to be able to cook outdoors and have a dining area. They might want a water feature. They are creating a place for a mini-vacation in their backyard."

Carlsbad Patio Retreat

The owners of this Carlsbad, California home offered AAA Landscape Specialists, Inc., the chance to completely remake their backyard. The design goal, according to the contractor, "was to create a family-oriented backyard with room to entertain. The client needed more space and wanted a fireplace, a covered patio area, a place to barbecue, and room for a Ping-Pong table and darts."

New Southern Invasive Plant

Sometimes landscape contractors choose invasive plants unaware of their status. Japanese blood grass (Imperata cylindrica 'Red Baron') has been recognized as a new invasive plant to avoid in certain southern states.

Texas Legislation To Allow Drought-Resistant Yards in HOAs

To battle the 3-year-old drought, many Texas homeowners are cutting back on their water use by switching to drought-friendly landscaping; however, some find an obstacle in their way: Homeowners Associations (HOAs). A new bill in the Texas state legislature would change that.

SITES Certifies Four New Projects

Seattle Center's Theater Commons and Donnelly Gardens (pictured) is one of four projects that earned certification from the Sustainable Sites Initiative in March. The GGN-designed installation includes bio-retention and evaporation gardens that collect and process stormwater runoff, a regional native plant garden, and a sustainable design showcase with educational activities for the public. Below the surface, a continuous gravel infiltration bed connects the basins and handles runoff.

Construction firms employed 5.78 million people in February, a gain of 48,000 jobs from January and 140,000 jobs year-over-year. The industry unemployment rate, which is not seasonally adjusted and is usually high in February, fell from 17.1 percent in February 2012 to 15.7 percent last month.

Washington State Saving Energy, Money with Hwy LED Lighting

Washington State is replacing some outdated highway lighting on US 101 with LED lights, joining California and Massachusetts in an initiative that should save the state thousands of dollars in energy and maintenance costs. Washington's transportation department will be able to control the system depending on traffic volume, and the LEDs will be brighter than the previous lighting system.

Virginia Replaces State Gas Tax, Boosts Transportation Funding

Virginia officials, led by Gov. Bob McDonnell, have approved a plan to eliminate and replace the state's gas tax with other sources of revenue that are expected to bring over $3.1 billion above existing revenues over the next five years for Virginia's highways, transit systems, rail networks, airports and port.

Light-Transmitting Concrete Fa?ade Premieres

Concrete, the world's most-used building material, is usually a drab backdrop for the people and events that live and work around it. A new "media fa?ade," unveiled in December at RWTH Aachen University in Aachen, Germany, is changing that with light-emitting concrete panels developed by German concrete manufacturer LUCEM.
