Glass Monument for Fayetteville, N.C. Veterans Park
ThinkGlass, of Boisbriand, Quebec, has produced this striking four-inch thick, 10 feet tall, five feet wide glass monument as an addition to Veterans Park in Fayetteville, N.C. Three Wesco WBD-100-1 low-voltage LEDs (12-volt, 5 watts each) were installed strategically around the monument for maximum impact, explains Rob Wagner, AIA, LEED AP.

U.S. Infrastructure Gets a D+
Wastewater infrastructure improved slightly in 2012, but still got a D grade from the American Society of Civil Engineers. Capital investment needs for the nation's wastewater and stormwater systems over the next 20 years is $298 billion. Pipes represent three quarters of those needs.

Bay Lights Dazzle

The public art installation on the western span of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge by Leo Villareal features 25,000 LEDs. The lights were turned on March 5, 2013, and will be on for two years, presenting a changing array of patterns and lighting. The inspiration for the lighting is the bridge's 75th anniversary. District of Columbia: a True Sustainable Leader

In the summer of 2011, D.C. mayor Vincent Gray announced a broad initiative to make the city a leader in sustainability, improve the quality of life for residents and create economic growth. The "Sustainable DC" plan has now been released. It spells out a broad range of sustainable accomplishments to be met by 2032.

Small Business Confidence Up Slightly In February
Confidence improved slightly among small-business owners in February, but entrepreneurs still aren't feeling a lot of optimism, nor are they hiring. This is the finding of a monthly survey by the National Federation of Independent Business.

California Goes After Unlicensed Contractors

One of the main complaints of licensed landscape contractors is being underbid by fly-by-night companies that have no licenses and carry no insurance, and thus have less overhead. States are taking notice and enforcement action. In California, the Butte County District Attorney's Office and the Contractors State License Board conducted an undercover sting operation called "California Blitz." Officers nabbed six alleged unlicensed contractors from Chico, Oroville, Palermo and Paradise.

More Green Roofs Coming To Seattle

Seattle, Washington's mayor, Mike McGinn, announced a plan to handle up to 700 million gallons of stormwater a year with natural systems instead of traditional "pipe-and-tank" systems. Sustainable stormwater treatment methods like green roofs, planned throughout the Emerald City, will soon add a literal touch to Seattle's nickname.

Kawasaki To Stop Making Handheld Lawn Equipment
The Engines and Power Products Division of Kawasaki Motors Corp., U.S.A. (KMC), announced that it will be exiting the handheld power products business category at the end of 2013. The company's dealers were notified of the supplier's decision to halt production of the Kawasaki branded equipment, effective at the end of this year.

Smothers Park & Owensboro Riverfront Redevelopment

The redevelopment of the riverfront in Owensboro, Kentucky, has brought nearly $70 million in additions and improvements to the area since planning began in 2001, and more than $1 billion in new developments to the area. The latest feature is Smothers Park, a five-block area that features a custom and fully accessible playground, multiple fountains, water features and a veteran's memorial. The splash pad includes two-dozen water jets over 2,315 square feet of safety surfacing.

Construction Jobs Grow in January

Employment in the construction industry increased in 34 states and Washington, D.C., between December and January, according to the latest analysis of industry jobs data by the Associated General Contractors of America. Steady growth in the housing market and less uncertainty in federal spending policies are creating a more positive outlook for future building.

New Home Construction Grows in February

Homebuilding showed signs of improvement in February, as housing starts and building permits neared five-year highs. Building permits, a sign of future construction, were 33.8 percent above February 2012 levels, and new housing starts were up 27.7 percent year-over-year.

New Finding for Urban Heat Islands

The urban heat island theory suggests that urban environments (human modified land surfaces) are hotter than nearby rural areas. Bugbot Drones Have Already Been Built

According to an Air Force simulation, researchers are at work on killer robots the size of bugs or small birds. These unobtrusive micro-air vehicles (MAVs), or ''bugbots,'' as reported in National Geographic, can perch on power lines, or enter a doorway as people go in and out. Equipped with micro-sensors, they may hover or crawl, moving unobtrusively to the target. They could do visual reconnaissance, such as detecting chemical, biological or radiation threats and relay that information. They could be deadly, too, carrying explosives, combustibles or deadly chemicals. The mind reels.
