Street & Pedestrian Lighting

What kind of street and pedestrian lighting is being installed across the country these days? We know many cities continue to retrofit their lighting to be more energy efficient. And, as you'll see in the feature, many locales are opting to retrofit with LEDs to save energy and maintenance costs.

Rollin' Down the River to St. Paul
Among the proposal for the St. Paul master plan is renovating Island Station, home to defunct coal power plant less than a mile up-river from downtown. The National Park Service envisions the island for the headquarters for the Mississippi National River and Recreation Area. Island Station L.L.C. aimed to build condos on it, but that never panned out.

Backyard Bedrock

This three-season backyard outdoor living space in Croton on Hudson, New York, was created from a blank canvas of ledgerock, trees and eroded soil. Non-essential ledgerock was removed to create the base for the living space, and five gardens were dug out around the outside of the hardscape, each with underground sprinklers for spring plantings.

The Roosevelt Collection: Lighting Chicago's South Loop

Redevelopment of The Roosevelt Collection, Chicago's 1.3 million square foot residential and retail development, led to an extensive overhaul and additions to the facility's lighting structure. The five LED trees in the center of the movie theater plaza had been installed previously, but Lightswitch improved the feature with better control wiring and programming through a solid-state control system. The firm also replaced broken luminaires in the area during installation.

New Legislation Seeks to End Ethanol Mandate

The Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) mandates that 36 billion gallons of renewable fuels be part of our nation's fuel supply by 2022. Almost all of this is currently being fulfilled by corn ethanol. In 2011, five billion bushels of the corn supply was used for ethanol - equal to nearly 40 percent of the U.S. corn crop. A new bill introduced in the House of Representatives will eliminate the corn-ethanol mandate for fuel production, among other reforms.
