Firms and Projects Announced for LAF's 2013 Case Study Program

Twenty design firms and 24 built projects have been selected for the Landscape Architecture Foundation's (LAF's) 2013 Case Study Investigation (CSI) program. CSI is a research collaboration that matches LAF-funded faculty-student research teams with leading practitioners to document the benefits of exemplary high-performing landscape projects. LAF reports over 30 firms applied to participate. Projects were selected based on design innovation, potential to produce comprehensive quantified benefits, availability of baseline information and the firm's commitment to the research collaboration.

U. of Southern Mississippi Announces Plan to Restore Tornado Damaged Campus

The tornado that stuck southern Mississippi on Feb. 10, 2013, damaged more than 800 homes and at least eight buildings on the University of Southern Mississippi campus (pictured) in Hattiesburg, with peak winds nearing 170 mph.

Wildlife and Livestock Need Landscaping Too

The Wyoming Legislature and the Wyoming Wildlife and Natural Resources Trust has funded $339,170 for Phase IV of the Farson Landowners' Landscape Initiative. This project is on 196,000 acres of private and public lands near Eden and Farson in Southwest Wyoming. This fourth of five phases will plant curled-leaf mahogany and serviceberry seedling shrubs for mule deer and elk winter forage on Rock Springs Grazing Association lands.

Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens Opens Center for Sustainable Landscapes

The new Center for Sustainable Landscapes (CSL) was named one of the SITES pilot projects for its native plantings, rooftop garden, stormwater lagoon, solar powered water distillation system, five rain gardens, porous paving and constructed wetlands. Design Alliance Architects of Pittsburgh was the project architect. The landscape architecture is by Andropogon Associates of Philadelphia.

Moongate Arises
Sculptor Allison Armour revealed her latest artwork, "Moongate," at Frimley4 Business Park in Surrey, England on March 25, 2013. The five-meter diameter sculpture of polished, marine grey stainless steel is part of Investream's extensive multi-million pound redevelopment and landscaping plans for the 13.4-acre park.

High Court Takes Up Red River Showdown

In a legal battle that may have far-reaching affects on interstate water wars, the US Supreme Court heard arguments on April 23rd in Tarrant Regional Water District v. Rudolf John Herrmann, et al. At the heart of the case is whether the water district can purchase about 150 billion gallons of water from the southeastern Oklahoma tributaries of the Red River that separate Oklahoma and Texas.

Researchers: Concrete Production Improved by Biofuel Waste

Engineering researchers at Kansas State University have discovered a method for making concrete with waste products from biofuel production, replacing Portland cement as a primary ingredient. The process reduces the carbon footprint of concrete production by using recycled materials, and strengthens the concrete by more than 30 percent.

Construction Materials Cost Index Flat in March

Construction materials prices remained static overall from February to March, as the industry began to absorb the price surges that transpired earlier this year. Falling prices for metals and diesel fuel held down the price index last month, despite increases in lumber and plywood, plastic construction products and prepared asphalt.

The district offers rebates on commercial grade battery powered eqipment and a variety of products for residential lawn care.

A new technical bulletin from the Interlocking Concrete Pavement Institute explains the characteristics and benefits of permeable pavement, step-by-step construction processes, and design considerations for a variety of scenarios. Permeable installations are recognized by local, state and federal government officials for their stormwater treatment and low impact development attributes.

Bright Lights, Tall Woods

Lighting the night landscape is an investment that rewards the home owner from dusk until dawn. The exterior lighting of this Springfield, Mass., pool cabana illuminates the natural stonewalls and enhances the wooden entry doors. Matching pergolas flanking the cabana add dimension and provide sheltered outdoor seating beneath lighting that visually defines the wraparound patio. Incandescent halogen lights highlight the pink hues of the stony creek granite, quarried in Brandford, CT.

STMA Advocacy Manual

The Sports Turfgrass Managers Association (STMA) released a 20-page (members-only) Advocacy Manual to assist those in the sports field industry with community and state government public policy advocacy efforts, both proactive and reactive.

Millions Available in Maryland
The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) announced the availability of $4 million in grants for bikeway projects in Maryland. The Maryland Bikeways Program administered by the Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT) began in 2011. Thus far, MDOT has awarded a total of $5.63 million to 48 projects.

Sustainable Asphalt?
The National Asphalt Pavement Association (NAPA) and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) recently partnered in a study regarding the use of reclaimed and recycled materials in asphalt pavements, as well as the use of warm-mix asphalt.

ComBATing White-nose Syndrome

The Bellamy Cave, located in Tennessee, home to the largest number of caves in the U.S. is the first manmade cave built for bats in the wild. The project was developed by The Nature Conservancy (Tennessee chapter) in an effort to combat a deadly fungus, white-nose syndrome that has killed millions of bats.

California to Host IAAPA Conference

The International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions (IAAPA) will hold their Tools of the Trade: Midway Games event May 21st - 22nd in Anaheim, California. The conference, geared toward midway games managers and directors is designed to foster the sharing of best practices on how parks set up and operate midway games, including how to "flash" a games area.

Irrigation industry professional Mauricio Troche has been promoted to national sales and marketing director of Netafim USA Landscape and Turf Division. Troche has more than 20 years of experience working in the landscape irrigation industry and will oversee a nationwide staff of regional sales managers. He will direct all landscape and turf sales activities, interacting with distributorships, municipalities, landscape architects and contractors.
