Denver is Bully for its Bike Program
Twenty-eight new Denver B-cycle stations will be added to the city by the end of May, bringing the system total to 80. The bike system is available to members nine months a year, between 5 a.m. and 12 a.m. The system is closed between December and March.

Global Position Without Satellites

Rain Barrels 101: Ohio Rebate Spurs Local Installations

The Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District's new stormwater fee includes a rebate program for homeowners that install rain barrels or rain gardens on their property to offset impervious surfacing. Residents participating in rain barrel workshops offered by the area conservation district are finding out why, where and how rain barrels are a useful addition for homeowners and local stormwater management.

Invasive Borer Threatens N.H. Emerald Ash

Agriculture officials in New Hampshire are scrambling to slow the spread of the emerald ash borer (inset), an invasive beetle discovered in Concord last month. Visible signs of the pest include snaking paths where larvae have tunneled into the wood, called "galleries" (pictured), D-shaped exit marks and bark removal where woodpeckers have tried to reach the borer larvae. If left unchecked, experts say the beetle could wipe out ash trees in New Hampshire within 10 years.

Will Home Price Hikes Hamper Market Health?

Despite the softening of economic growth in other sectors, home prices continue to surge in most major metropolitan markets. Some analysts are concerned, however, that the expanding prices represent a "bubble within a bust" that could bring more trouble to the housing recovery in the months to come.

Permeable Pavers: Antidote to Urban Heat Effect?
New findings demonstrate that porous and permeable pavements are well suited to reduce urban heat island effect, especially under wet conditions. Designers installing these pavements might be eligible for 3-4 LEED points for the stormwater management and heat mitigation benefits of permeable surfacing.

The National Precast Concrete Association, which represents manufacturers of plant-produced precast concrete products, is supporting the U.S. Army Reserve (AR) by signing an agreement to hire soldiers and veterans.

Public Spending Cuts Slowing Construction Growth

Federal spending on construction projects fell 1.7 percent in March, and state and local spending, which encompasses a larger share of overall spending than federal outlays, tumbled 4.3 percent, the biggest drop since March 2002. Overall public construction spending fell 4.1 percent, the largest monthly decline since March 2002, to a $258.3 billion annual rate, the lowest since October 2006.

2013 Olmsted Winners Announced

Although the Olmsted Scholars Program, the premier national award and recognition program for landscape architecture students, is in its sixth year, this is the first year that LAF has offered separate recognition and awards for graduate and undergraduate students.

Wisconsin Adopts Pesticide

According to a National Pest Management Association report, the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection recently adopted revisions to the state's current pesticide rules. The revisions go into effect June 1st, and will update current rules related to structural pesticide applications.
