Summer Slows Improving Markets Index, But Growth Trends Still Strong

The NAHB's index of improving housing markets shed eight metro areas in August, the index's second consecutive month of decline, according to an August 6 report. The index has declined by 27 markets following a high-water mark in March, but the year-over-year trend remains unambiguously positive, with 247 improving markets in August 2013 compared to just 80 in August 2012.

Designing with Mollusks

Construction has begun on a new pier on Gowanus Bay, just south of the Red Hook waterfront in Brooklyn, that will be used to attract ribbed mussels via a field of piles and woven web of 'fuzzy rope.' SCAPE Landscape Architecture of New York City originally presented this "oyster-tecture" approach at MoMA's Rising Currents Exhibition in 2010.

Construction Materials Prices Stable Despite Growing Energy Costs

The July producer price index for construction inputs - raw materials used in construction projects and common industry essentials like diesel fuel - grew about two percent year-over-year, though the index remained flat from June to July. A 21.6 percent year-over-year increase in crude energy prices was offset by declines in other categories, including softwood lumber, and nonferrous wire and cable (pictured).

July Existing Home Prices and
Sales Still Climbing

Existing home sales increased 6.5 percent in July to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 5.39 million units, gaining on a downwardly revised 5.06 million-unit rate in June; the rate is 17.2 percent above the 4.60 million-unit pace in July 2012, marking the 25th month that sales have remained above year-ago levels.

Nonresidential Construction Down For 2013 Despite July Surge

After a slight drop in June, groundbreaking on nonresidential construction projects jumped by more than 18 percent in July, buoyed by monthly increases in commercial and institutional starts. Compared to July 2012, however, starts are down by more than six percent, and year-to-date starts are down nearly 20 percent from the same period in 2012.

Supporters of Ethanol
Launch Media Campaign

The advertising blitz from Growth Energy -- "You're no dummy. Don't let the oil industry treat you like one" -- will be run on major cable news networks and in print and radio. The campaign features a ventriloquist, the oil industry's Mr. Slick, with a dummy who starts talking on his own, taking apart some of Big Oil's arguments against renewable fuels. Growth Energy also launched a website to challenge some of these claims.
