July Construction Spending Sets Four-Year High

BMPs for RECPs

Erosion control blankets (ECBs) and turf reinforcement mats (TRMs) are also referred to as rolled erosion control products (RECPs). They are made from a variety of materials, such as wood fiber, straw fiber, coconut fiber (coir) and polypropylene. Pictured here is a Core of Engineers levee project near New Orleans that uses high-performance TRMs made of high-tensile poly threads woven into a 3-D mat.

Finished Lot Shortage Stifling Housing Recovery

A shortage of land primed for homebuilding is inflating the growth of home prices and stifling the housing recovery, which continues to underperform historically. Housing starts averaged more than 1.5 million units annually from 1960-2000, and did not fall below 1 million until 2008. Though starts have recovered from a low of 550,000 in 2009, the annual rate was less than than 900,000 units in the Census Bureau's July report.

Housing Growth Illuminates Fading Shadow Inventory

The housing market's shadow inventory, which includes unlisted bank-owned homes not yet on the market and homes in pre-foreclosure, declined by more than 30 percent annually in July. Housing's steady growth this year, most notably in increasing prices, has allowed lenders to bring distressed homes to the market without hampering the industry's progress.

Reaping Rewards from Hydroseeding

Hydroseeding systems can be as small as 50-gallon units, but a typical entry-level machine for contractors tends to have a tank capacity of around 300 gallons, a discharge range of less than 90 feet and is hose operated. Larger units like the one pictured, with its 500 gallon capacity and discharge range of 100 feet, can be operated with a platform mounted turret gun. Mechanical systems have one or more rotating shafts with paddles inside the tank that stir the material to blend the mix. Jet systems use jet agitation to do the mixing.
