New Home Construction Edges Upward in August

Construction starts on new homes increased 0.9 percent from July to August, though the gains were only made possible by a downward revision of July's building rate. Starts increased 19 percent year-over-year, nudged upward by improvements in single-family homebuilding.

Family Sports Park O'Fallon, IL

Family Sports Park, a 200-acre addition to O'Fallon, Ill., includes a two-acre adventure-themed play area with two sets of play structures, a "sprayground" splash pad for water play, and a shallow streambed with flowing water for nature-centered fun. A light broom finish on the concrete provides a durable, slip resistant surface beneath the rain tunnel, and colored concrete banding defines distinct spaces for the aquatic attractions.

Sales of existing homes in August reached a 5.48 million-unit annual pace, the highest sales rate since February 2007. Total sales have remained above year-ago levels for the past 26 months, driven by 18 consecutive months of year-over-year price increases.

A survey of American and Canadian segmental concrete makers by the Interlocking Concrete Pavement Institute shows sales improving among producers of concrete paving slabs, segmental concrete and permeable interlocking concrete pavement.

EPA Pollinator Labeling Deadline Announced

According to a news brief by the National Pest Management Association, the EPA has announced January 31, 2014, as the deadline for manufacturers shipping pesticides to amend their labeling on pollinators.

New Park for Milwaukee Recreates an Oak Savanna

Milwaukee's Rotary Centennial Arboretum, half park, half arboretum, opened Sept. 28. The arboretum, bounded on the west by the Milwaukee River and the Oak Leaf Trail to the east, combines old industrial land between E. North Ave. and E. Locust St., and stretches through wooded areas of Riverside Park. The park is also the southern gateway to the Milwaukee River Greenway, 800 acres of green space that includes Gordon, Kern, Lincoln and Estabrook parks.

Tom Delaney Reappointed to EPA
The Professional Landcare Network announced that its director of government affairs, Tom Delaney, has been reappointed to the Environmental Protection Agency's Pesticide Program Dialogue Committee.

Lappas + Havener Is Now ''Surface 678''

Among the landscape architecture work of Lappas + Havener, now rebranded as ''Surface 678,'' is the new 244,000 sq. ft. Durham County (North Carolina) Human Services Complex. A bluestone and granite paved interior courtyard with slab seating and lighted bollards is a large employee gathering space closed off from the street by a series of glass doors to increase security. The project is pursuing LEED Gold certification for the building. Freelon Group is the architect.

August New Home Sales Recover From July Losses

Sales of new homes increased about eight percent in August, shaking off a decline in July that wiped out most of the gains made in the first half of the year. New home prices increased 0.6 percent, and the supply of new homes on the market increased to the highest level since March 2011.

Riverfront Brownfield Renatured

A 33-acre brownfield area, now known as Justison Landing, is part of a comprehensive riverfront revitalization that has transformed derelict industrial lands of south Wilmington, Del., along the Christina River. Native plants and their cultivars were specified for the bioswales, a stormwater management feature designed by Oasis Design Group to address urban runoff water and promote infiltration. Asian Citrus Psyllids Make their Way to Orange County, Calif.

Asian citrus psyllid was first found in the United States in Palm Beach County, Florida, in June 1998. By 2001, it had spread to 31 counties in Florida. In 2001, ACP was accidentally introduced into the Rio Grande Valley in Texas. It was subsequently found in Hawaii in 2006, and in Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina and California in 2008.
