Hotel spending is leading all non-residential construction categories by a wide margin, as architecture and construction firms ramp up activity on new builds and renovation projects. A Rooftop Garden for Little Green Thumbs

The rooftop garden, located in downtown Chicago, is situated on top of the Northwestern Memorial Hospital's parking garage that also houses the Bernice E. Lavin Early Childhood Education Center. Students from Chicago Botanic Garden's therapy certification program partnered with hospital and education center staff to plant the garden.

Scientists to Study Rim Fire Sites

The Yosemite Rim Fire burned some 402 square miles of forest and meadows in and around California's Yosemite National Park over two months this past summer. The cost of fighting the fire was estimated at over $127 million as of October 24.

Philadelphia Tests Pavers for Pollution Prevention Potential

The Philadelphia Water Department (PWD) is using a major employee parking lot as a testing ground for various types of permeable pavement materials designed to prevent stormwater runoff from polluting local rivers and streams. Funded by the PWD and the Environmental Protection Agency, the project will test and showcase up to six different types of permeable pavement.

St. Joe Fla. Land Deal Will Make LDS Church Largest Private Land Owner

St. Joe's sale of 598 square miles of Florida panhandle land to AgReserves, Inc., a farming and ranching company of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS), coupled with the church's 295,166 acres in central Florida (Deseret Ranches), will give the LDS a total of 678,000 acres in Florida, making it the largest private holding in the state. In 2011, TIME reported the LDS church had at least $30 billion in assets.

Homeownership Remains at 18-Year Low, Residential Vacancy Rates Flat in Third Quarter

The nation's homeownership rate was 65.1 percent in the third quarter, seasonally adjusted, unchanged from the second quarter and perpetuating the lowest rate since the last three months of 1995. Homeownership fell from a 65.3 percent rate in the third quarter last year. The rate peaked during the housing boom at 69.4 percent, seasonally adjusted, in the second quarter of 2004.

The Tree Care Industry Association has announced new root management standards from the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). The ANSI A300 (Part 8)-2013 root management standard seeks to improve the quality, life expectancy, and safety of trees by promoting and facilitating the care of roots.
