Mark Focht, FASLA, Is ASLA's New President (2013-2014)

In his first address as president of ASLA, Mark Focht, FASLA, said he will focus on four areas: "The power of our profession: to be loud and proud about our profession"; the profession's natural leadership role in planning and implementing green infrastructure and stormwater management; urban issues; and encouraging students and young practitioners to get involved in nontraditional landscape architecture practices, such as nonprofits and public service.

Industry Reviewed and Forecasted by Orange County, Calif., Homebuilders

Homebuilders, industry specialists, students and others gathered at Chapman University in Orange, Calif., for a panel discussion on the state of the local and national homebuilding industry. The event was put on by the Argyros School's Hoag Center for Real Estate and the Building Industry Association of Orange County.

STMA Announces 2013 Field of the Year Award Winners

The Columbus Crew Soccer Stadium in Columbus, Ohio, was a 2013 winner of a Field of the Year award given out by the Sports Turf Managers Association. Since 1981, the association and its 34 local chapters have been providing education and information and sharing practical knowledge in the art and science of sports field management. Its members oversee sports fields and facilities at schools, colleges and universities, parks and recreational facilities, and professional sports stadiums.

SUNY at Cobleskill Wins Turf Competition

The State University of New York at Cobleskill has more than 2,500 students enrolled in 52 associate and baccalaureate degree programs offered through the School of Agriculture and Natural Resources and the School of Business and Liberal Arts & Sciences. The 782-acre campus features the new Center for Environmental Sciences and Technologies and the $38.7 million Center for Agricultural and Natural Resources, which is scheduled to open in the fall of 2014.

La Crosse Forage and Turf Seed is a supplier of turf, forage, and pasture seeds, and related specialties for turf, landscaping and agriculture. The company is affiliated with the Rural American Fund, a private investment firm located in Chicago, Ill., that targets investments in rural American business enterprises.

Homebuilders Still Bullish on Single-Family Market

Builder confidence in the new single-family housing market was unchanged in November from a downwardly revised level of 54 on the National Association of Home Builders/Wells Fargo Housing Market Index (HMI), marking the sixth consecutive month that more builders have viewed market conditions as good than poor.

September Construction Materials Prices Edge Upward

Prices of residential construction building materials were 0.2 percent higher in September after rising 0.3 percent in August, and nonresidential construction prices were unchanged in September after increasing 0.5 percent in August. The Producer Price Index (PPI) for all construction materials increased 0.4 percent due to price increases for lumber, cement, gypsum and other materials.

ASLA Class of Fellows: Pennsylvania Chapter
Since founding the firm in 1972, Ed Black has served as president of H. Edward Black and Associates, P.C. His career mission is to demonstrate that landscape architects are team leaders "from the walls out," a focus that took root in 1974, when he was appointed to the Pennsylvania State Board of Landscape Architects.

ICON parks design (IPD) is a sole proprietorship directed by John Ryther, ASLA. IPD's public sector work has included civic plazas, streetscapes, bikeways, parks and playgrounds in Boston and its outlying communities. IPD has also worked internationally in Jordan, Iran and China on projects ranging from new towns for laborers to high-end communities and villas for the wealthy. Ryther has designed for Heritage State Parks, incorporating elements like play equipment, pavements, fencing and signage. He is also known for unique, decorative ironwork designs for gateways, fences and fountains.

JMMDS designed the Toronto Music Garden with cellist Yo-Yo Ma as a creative collaborator. The design of this award-winning three-acre public park on Toronto's Harborfront was inspired by the "First Suite for Unaccompanied Cello" by Johann Sebastian Bach. Curving paths move visitors through six garden "movements." In 2005, the Toronto Music Garden received a Leonardo Da Vinci award for innovation and creativity.

EPA Plans Renewable Fuel Mandate Cut in 2014

The Environmental Protection Agency proposed lowering requirements for biofuel use in 2014 on November 15, cutting corn-based ethanol targets for the first time since the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) was established in 2007.
