Gov't Spending Spike Spurs October Construction Gains

Spending on construction projects increased 0.8 percent in October due to a surge in federal, state and local government outlays. Private homebuilding decreased 0.6 percent, the third decrease in the last four months.

October New Home Sales Spike Provides Dubious Boost

New single-family home sales increased more than 25 percent from September to October, according to the Commerce Department, erasing a negative three-month trend that included a massive downward revision to the August sales figures. The preliminary October report, which includes a margin of error close to 20 percent, is likely to receive a similar correction in future reports, according to market analysts.

The American Society of Landscape Architects is actively supporting the Innovative Stormwater Infrastructure Act, a piece of legislation introduced in both houses of Congress in November that would allow states, localities and other qualified entities to plan, design, and implement green infrastructure projects to address stormwater management and other water issues with grant assistance from the Environmental Protection Agency.

ANSI Standards Approved for Rainwater Catchment

ARCSA, the association that promotes sustainable rainwater harvesting practices, has announced the approval of ANSI standards for rainwater catchment.

The Certified Hydroseeding Professional designation requires 40 hours of instruction, two years of hydroseeding experience and successful completion of an online certification exam. The required instruction is spread over five disciplines: basic hydroseeding, business operations, soil and fertility basics, turfgrass science, and erosion control.

IECA, a non-profit organization for erosion and sediment control professionals and producer of the Environmental Connection conference, has announced that they will host more than 125 technical sessions at the 2014 conference in Nashville, Tenn.

Bobcat Launches Tier 4 500 Frame-Size Loaders with Non-DPF Emissions Solution

This shows Bobcat's S530 loader with an auger. The Tier 4 Bobcat non-DPF solution was achieved by designing an ultra-low particulate combustion engine. ULPC is accomplished through a specially designed engine combustion chamber that significantly reduces the amounts of particulate matter created during combustion. Therefore, Tier 4 emissions compliance can be achieved without using a DPF.
