ASLA 4th Quarter Landscape Architectural Firm Survey

The ASLA 4th Quarter 2013 national survey was fielded January 16-31, 2014, with 287 primary firm contacts responding. "Business conditions remained stalled for the landscape architecture profession in the fourth quarter," reports ASLA, with billable hours and inquiries for new work dipping during the fourth quarter.

Construction Industry Adds Jobs, Sheds Workers in January

The construction industry added 179,000 jobs from January 2013 through last month, including an unexpected spike of 48,000 jobs from December to January despite the cold weather that has gripped much of the country. The number of unemployed construction workers actively looking for industry jobs declined by 277,000 year-over-year, however, indicating that nearly 100,000 workers left the industry over the same span.

Calif. Agencies Take Drought Actions

Last December, Calif. Gov. Jerry Brown formed a Drought Task Force to review expected water allocations and California's preparedness for water scarcity. Entering 2014, California officially began its third year of drought, prompting Gov. Brown to declare a drought state of emergency, asking state officials to take all necessary actions to prepare for water shortages. Last year was the state's driest on record. It's estimated that 90 percent of the state is experiencing "severe or extreme drought conditions."

EPA Approves Use of Recycled Coal Ash as Cement Substitute

A new method for evaluating coal combustion residuals has led the EPA to approve the use of recycled coal ash as an acceptable alternative for Portland cement in concrete. Coal residuals are formed when coal is burned in boilers for power generation or industrial use.

The NAHB homebuilder confidence index reported a score of 56 in January, a one-point decline from the downwardly revised score of 57 in December. "Following an unexpected jump last month, builder confidence has essentially leveled out and is holding at a solid level," said NAHB chairman Rick Judson. Index scores above 50 indicate builder perceptions of the market are more positive than negative.
