Construction Workforce Continues to Add Jobs in March

Total construction employment reached 5,964,000 in March, a gain of
151,000 jobs - or 2.6 percent of the workforce - from a year earlier. The unemployment rate for workers actively looking for jobs and last employed in construction declined from 14.7 percent a year earlier to 11.3 percent last month, as the reduced amount of skilled labor still in the industry are finding more projects to work on.

HNA 2014 Dates Announced

HNA, the annual trade show produced by the ICPI, has announced dates for the 2014 show, which will be held at the Kentucky Exposition Center in Louisville, Kentucky, October 22-24.

The Governor Thomas Bennett House: Charleston, S.C.

The Gov. Thomas Bennett oak is the focal point of the garden. There were three existing up lights. The new lights are two 5-watt LEDs with 40-degree spread, and one 5-watt LED with 30-degree spread. There are also three Hadco down lights mounted in the tree to light the center of the oak, and one to highlight the main limbs, all 5-watt LEDs with 40 degree spreads. The Copper Moon path lights use 2.4-watt LEDs.

Parameters Well-Defined

Creative Nightscapes of North Richland, Texas, illuminated this residence in Southlake, Texas, with 356 lights on the home and property and 129 lights in the water features. All fixtures are from Kichler's Design Pro Integrated LED line, and all the lamps are 3,000 Kelvin. There are a variety of up, down, wash, path, deck, arbor, hardscape and waterproof fixtures with various degree spreads. 2-in-1 accent lights were mounted on top of the rain gutters to highlight the dormers and chimneys around the front and back of the home, which helps make the residence stand out. In order to hide some of the wire, stonemasons were called in to remove stone from the facade and replace the stone once the wires were installed.

Preparing the Next Generation of Landscape Professionals

The renovation of a visitor's courtyard at UMASS provided an opportunity for landscape construction students to get some hands-on hardscape installation experience. The students worked with school staff and an installation crew to replace old, impermeable surfacing with 2,100 square feet of permeable interlocking concrete pavers.

April 2014 Economic News

After a 10-point decline in February, the NAHB homebuilder confidence index regained just one point in March, reaching a score of 47. Builder sentiment has declined significantly due to harsh winter conditions and a shortage of skilled construction labor and available, ready-to-build lots. Index scores below 50 indicate more builders perceive conditions as poor than good.

PGMS Restores Historic Cemetery in North Carolina

At Odd Fellows Cemetery in Winston-Salem, N.C., a ton of lime was spread, an acre of turfgrass and 2,500 daffodils planted, and four yards of mulch spread. Volunteers cleared an acre of woodland brush and leaves. Litter was picked up over 13 acres and over 200 yards of debris were removed to be hauled away by the city.

Ancient Irrigation Technique Makes Comeback
Using a buried unglazed clay pot called an olla to water plants and vegetables can save up to 70 percent of the water used in traditional spraying, since little is lost due to evaporation or run-off.

The APSP, a national organization that represents pool, hot tub, and spa manufacturers, has announced that nominations are being accepted for the 2014 Dr. Neil Lowry Memorial Grant.

ASLA Launches Educational Resources
for K-12 Teachers, Students

The ASLA educational resources explain to students how landscape architects draw upon knowledge of the environment, sciences and arts to design outdoor spaces and green infrastructure, such as plazas, campuses, parks, playgrounds, streetscapes and residential properties. The Career Discover website shows the evolution of Columbus Circle in New York City from sketch to reality as a prime example for students.

Housing Markets Continue Slow Gains in April

The National Association of Home Builders' Leading Markets Index gained 11 metro areas year-over-year in April, as the nationwide index score improved on March's reading by one point to reach 88. Eighty-three percent of the markets measured have improved since the Index's inception last year.
