San Diego Stormwater Strategies

The University of California at San Diego's Charles David Keeling Apartments contain 500 dormitory beds within three residential buildings, which frame a courtyard and stand adjacent to amenities like basketball courts, a barbecue station and open, natural spaces. The LEED Platinum project manages 100 percent of onsite precipitation over approximately 158,000 square feet with a combination of bioswales, basins, weirs and conveyance channels.

Out of the Cocoon: Gibson Mariposa Park, El Monte, Calif.

More than four acres of an abandoned industrial area used for smelting
precious metals in El Monte, Calif., were cleaned up and transformed
into Gibson Mariposa Park, a butterfly-themed park that features a
splash pad, play structures, basketball courts, a butterfly habitat and an
outdoor classroom.

Sky Mirror Fountain, AT&T Stadium, Dallas

Sir Anish Kapoor's 35-foot diameter, 23-ton "Sky Mirror" sits on a granite "plinth," which is supported by reinforced structural concrete piers. The top of the plinth is a reflecting pool and fountain. The mirror is polished 316-grade stainless steel (316 has outstanding welding characteristics). The concave mirror side faces east, positioned and angled to reflect the color and cloud patterns of the Texas sky, while reflecting stadium crowds on the other side.

Rory Meyers Children's Adventure Garden, Dallas Arboretum

As visitors arrive in the Rory Meyers Children's Adventure Garden at the Dallas Arboretum on flagstone pavers, they pass through a sculptural gateway and under an arch bearing the garden's namesake. The entry gate (31.5-ft. wide by 15.5-ft. tall) has 3/8-inch dia., solid steel rods decorated with Monarch butterflies and bluebonnet leaf patterns. The gate, arch,
sign (Big D Metalworks) and shade structures (Steel Boss/Baten) are
galvanized steel. An arching 10-inch dia. steel pipe frame supports the 1-ft. 7.5-inch dia. aluminum ribbon band, upon which is Harrington bold lettering in a Tnemic medium-bronze color. Pins secure the lettering to the background ribbon, and 1/2 -inch steel tendrils are welded to the leaves and to the pipe frame.

Stradivarius Swimming Sanctuary

Luxury pool builder Cipriano Custom Pools & Landscaping, located in Bergen County N.J., recently won the "Best Gunite Swimming Pool Award" for their design of a residential 'violin' pool. The project came about when the homeowner, an amateur violinist and violin collector, approached the firm with an idea of building a swimming pool in the shape of an 18th century Stradivarius, including the most intricate parts, such as the chinrest, tailpiece, purfling, f-holes, and bridge. A Stradivarius, of course, is an extremely coveted instrument made by the Stradivari family, most notable by Antonio Stradivari, particularly during the 17th and
18th centuries.

The Village at Meridian, Idaho

There are two ponds on two levels at the Village at Meridian in Meridian, Idaho. Separating the upper and lower ponds is a 50-ft. long waterfall (lower left). Two 20-hp pumps power the flow over the falls, and 9 white underwater lights illuminate it.

Exeter Gardens - Inspiring a Community

Architectural Billings Index Turns Positive in May

The Architecture Billings Index (ABI) from the American Institute of Architects turned positive in May after consecutive months of negative reports. The metric reached a score of 52.6, a three-point jump from April. Index scores above 50 indicate growth in billings.

May Existing-Home Sales on the Rise

Sales of existing homes reached a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 4.89 million units in May, increasing 4.9 percent from an upwardly revised
4.66 million in April. Sales remain 5.0 percent below the 5.15 million-unit level in May 2013. The 4.9 percent month-over-month gain in May was the largest monthly improvement since the 5.5 percent increase in
August 2011.
