N.Y. Community Receives Lightning-Quick Playground

Founded in 1996, KaBOOM!, has served over 9 million children in the United States by building or improving over 17,000 play spaces in more than 250 communities.

Children in Jamestown, N.Y., now get to play at a brand new playground that was built on August 25 in only 6 hours. Volunteers from the Jamestown Parks, Recreation and Conservation Department and the community joined the nonprofit KaBOOM!, to transform an empty lot into a state-of-the-art, partially kid-designed playground at Chadakoin Park.

Designers Julia Jamrozik and Coryn Kempster partnered with the Parks, Recreation and Conservation Department for the project, but they were not the only ones with big ideas for the project. In June, children from the surrounding area were given the opportunity to draw their dream playground. The new play space was designed based off their ideas and will provide more than 600 children in Jamestown with a safe place to play.

This playground is the second to have been built as part of KaBOOM!'s partnership with the Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Foundation's Built to Play initiative. The initiative will award $1,000,000 in grants, ranging from $10,000 to $80,000, to different communities for the purpose of building new playgrounds. Through the creation of unique play spaces, in this year alone, the Built to Play initiative plans to build more than 20 new playgrounds that reach thousands of children in western N.Y. and southeast Michigan.
