2019 American Planning Association Winners

The American Planning Association awarded 5 recipients for their efforts to improve and strengthen their communities. The winners range from individuals and team-based projects to programs and tools.


The American Planning Association (APA) announced the winners for the 2019 National Planning Excellence Awards. The awards honor planning efforts, initiatives and individuals that work to improve their respective communities. Eligibility is based on a finished project, program, tool, process, report or ordinance and must be submitted within three years of completion. The categories are Advancing Diversity & Social Change, HUD Secretary's Opportunity & Empowerment Award, Daniel Burnham Award for a Comprehensive Plan, Pierre L'Enfant International Planning Award (for international nominees), and the Planning Pioneers Award.

The 2019 National Planning Excellence Awards Winners:
Advancing Diversity & Social Change
• Carolina Martinez and the Paradise Creek Planning Partnership - National City, California

HUD Secretary's Opportunity & Empowerment Award
• Family Scholar House - Louisville, Kentucky

Daniel Burnham Award for a Comprehensive Plan
• Kaua'i County General Plan - County of Kaua'i, Hawaii

Pierre L'Enfant International Planning Award
• Northeast False Creek Plan - Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada

Planning Pioneers Award
• Mary Means - Silver Spring, Maryland

The APA also announced 20 winners for the 2019 National Planning Achievement Awards. Achievement award winners are based on innovative planning within specific topical areas and are recognized for good planning work. The categories are National Planning Achievement Award For A Best Practice, National Planning Achievement Award For Economic Development Planning, National Planning Achievement Award For A Grassroots Initiative, National Planning Achievement Award For Public Outreach, National Planning Achievement Award For Resilience, National Planning Achievement Award For Transportation Planning, and National Planning Achievement Award For Urban Design. Each winner was awarded silver or gold for their planning initiatives.
